Chapter 26
The playlist Clint had created for Blakeâs road trip helped her get through the journey without making one stop.
She sang along to hits from the â80s and tried to ignore the lump in her throat as she drove past the interstate exit she usually took to go to her and Parkerâs loft apartment and went straight to her parentsâ house in West Knoxville.
âBlake! Iâm so excited youâre here!â her mom hugged her.
âGlad to see you, too! Whereâs Dad?â Blake asked.
âHeâs working, but heâll be around for the rest of your visit. Now, come on, I want to hear how things are going with Clint and your business.â
Blake told her about the wedding and the guests they had hosted so far at the B&B, sharing how helpful Nancy and Clint were day-in and day-out.
âI canât imagine running the business without them. I love them both dearly,â Blake said.
âClint, especially?â her mom asked, jokingly.
Blake rolled her eyes. âI shouldâve been with him all along. I couldnât be happier.â
Her mom grabbed her hand to inspect the engagement ring. âItâs striking, but not cookie-cutter. When are we going wedding dress shopping?â
âWe havenât set a date yet, but when we do, we can start planning and shopping,â Blake said, playing with her ring.
âSounds great.â Her mother smiled.
Blake and her mom began cooking dinner so it would be ready by the time her father got home from work. He came into the house carrying a strawberry pie from the Buttermilk Pie shop, Blakeâs favorite Knoxville dessert.
âThanks, Dad.â She wrapped her arms around him. âI canât wait to dig into that pie. Iâve missed you!â
He smiled and helped Susan dish out spaghetti and meatballs for the three of them. During dessert, Blake caught her dad up on a lot of the same things she had discussed with her mom. Sheâd missed them since moving to the island, but she didnât regret her decision.
The next day, Brittany, her youngest sister, returned home from college for the weekend.
Walking into the house, Brittany dropped her tote bag in the foyer and ran to her sister. âOh my God, Blake! Youâre here!â she signed, embracing Blake and jumping up and down.
Brittany, the youngest, was excelling in her senior level interior design classes and had a job offer at a design firm in Atlanta for when she graduated the following May. She and Ryan, her high school boyfriend, were engaged, but they hadnât set a date, just in case she went to grad school instead of taking a job right away.
âLetâs have a double wedding,â Blake teased her sister, who had always demanded to have her own place in life, not to live in anyoneâs shadow.
âAs if.â Brittany rolled her eyes and laughed.
The sisters climbed into Blakeâs car, and she drove them to the loft apartment. She shivered, unsure of how to react to being back inside the apartment where she and Parker had lived. No one had moved her belongings since sheâd left. A wave of nausea threatened to take hold, but she didnât want to worry Brittany.
